HVAC Services – Tips for Residential Homes
Before calling any office for a service call, make sure you have the following answers ready:
- Do you live in a house, townhouse, or apartment? If you live in an apartment, you may need to call the property manager first.
- If your unit Gas, Electric, or Oil? Oil is most easily identifiable because there will be an oil tank in your basement and/or around your property. To identify if your HVAC is gas or electric, the easiest, but not always 100% certain way, is to look at your stove: if your stove is gas, your home will most likely have a gas furnace; if it is electric, your home will most likely have a heat pump.
- How many tons is your unit? Simply go outside to your outdoor unit and write down the brand name and model number. The model number tells us everything we need to know about your unit.
- Approximately how old is your HVAC unit? If the unit is ten years or older, there may be multiple problems attributed to its deteriorating condition. Before calling a technician to repair, it is important to consider that it may be more cost effective to replace the unit than to service it.
- Have you changed your filter? The most commonly found problem with improperly functioning equipment is forgetting to change the filter.
- Is your thermostat on and properly functioning?
- Is there a power or water outage in your area? If there is, you should contact your local power and/or water company first like PEPCO and BGE or WSSC.
- Is your hot water heater broken? If it is, this is a plumbing problem & not a Heating & Air-Conditiong problem, but not to worry, we can still help!
